Students' conclusions about their task in the "ENERGY BLOG" (WIKI)

ABOUT WASTE AND RECYCLING BY PANNA GEHÉR AND HER TEAM (Hungarian School)

We’ve recently interviewed some of the caretakers in school. We asked them about recycling and how to make our school green. We realized that the school wastes a lot.

  • Waste of electricity and heating:

Students don’t usually turn off the lights. They should put some stickers on the light switches that ask the students not to leave them on.

Secondly, the staff must control the insulation of the windows. If the windows aren’t insulated well, we’ll waste lots of energy.

  • Waste of paper:

Students shouldn’t get canned soft drinks because they usually don’t drink it. Someone should rather put some wells to each floor so everybody would drink clean, cold water and they wouldn’t make that much rubbish.

Secondly, we got to know that the school uses recycle bins. caretakers carry all of the waste down to the basement. There, a kind women, called Miss Csóka Istvánné selects the different types of rubbish. We think this is not a good solution. It might be a good idea to put recycle bins to each classroom. So students can select their own litter. Miss Csóka thinks reycyling is very important. She teaches her grandchild to do so as well.

  • Waste of food:

Students usually don’t eat the food that they got. They should be given as much food as they want to eat.

Miss Csóka also told us that the whole school produces 14-15 bags of waste a day. These are terrible figures. We think if we cared more about recycling, we would produce less than 10 bags of litter a day.

The next step in our project will be to find solutions to these problems!!!

  1. ABOUT ELECTRICITY ALEXIS ANDREAZZA, EVA RANGAYEN, NOELLIA BEGUE, ELISABETH DIJOUX ( From our partner school in La Réunion)
First of all,in our school, the levels of electricity consumption per year are 148,090 kwh.
The devices in the day are used round-the-clock , some are off, but we don't use green lights. We should use them.
In our school , we have 163 computers but only 15 are efficient and there is an automatic system that turns on and off when people are present or not. It's the same for the lights :there are automatic systems that turn on and off when people are here or not like for the light.
In order to save energy at school we must:
-Turn off the lights and use natural light.
-turn off the ventilation and open windows.
-turn off the computers after each use.
-use the video-projector only in case of necessity.
-sensibilized the people in school and staff of school.

  3. Conclusions by Portuguese Students:
Due to low temperatures in autumn and winter we need to keep our classrooms warm and consequently we use electrical heaters to do so. Each classroom has got a 2000W heater but they are not energy efficient. There are six air conditioners in other places at school such as the library. They are more energy efficient because they have the inverter system. More and more people are becoming aware of the need to close the windows and the doors when the heating systems are on and of the need to turn the heaters off when they are not really needed. In fact, they should be turned off after lunch time. If we compare energy consumption in November 2011 (18 961 kWh) with May 2011 (10 646 kWh) we easily conclude that this big difference is related to winter time and to the need of keeping the different places at school warm enough. Thermal insulation in our buildings is very weak because these are old buildings, so the temperature in a classroom in February can range from 9ºC to on Students' conclusions about their task in the "ENERGY BLOG" (WIKI)
