  1. ABOUT PAPER BY LUCA SZABÓ AND HER TEAM (Hungary)

First we were in the printer room. The school uses twenty-five packages of paper a week. In each package there are five-hundred A/4 size paper.(This huge amount is related to the number of students and teachers in our school.) They collect the sheets that still have an empty side and teachers can use them again. Apart from this, the school hasn't got any selective paper bins, unfortunately. We also interviewed the receptionist and he said that although there aren't specific places to recycle paper, the school employs an underprivileged woman who selects the waste, and the paper is carried separately from here. Another source of this text is our and our classmates' experiences. We found that usually students and teachers don't waste paper (maybe with some tests). The school uses an electronic system: Science Advance System (SAS). With the help of it we can communicate with anybody who is a member of it, we can follow what is happening in school etc. Almost everybody use the Internet (more or less) to exchange information and to reduce the amount of unnecessary paper.During the lessons sometimes the teacher give us information on paper, usually both sides are used. In some classrooms the interactive whiteboards replace paper. In the canteen we don't use any paper. There are some books and textbooks, which are borrowed from the library, for example we have a mathematics textbook from there. It's important to protect our natural treasures!

    1. About paper, by Océane Blancard and Yann Tirpedian:(La Réunion)

How much paper is used by printers and photocopy machines in your school?
900 reams of paper are used annually for the photocopier.

Are there specific places to recycle paper? Where? Do teachers and students regularly use them?
There is a special bin in the staff room, and teachers often use it.
Are photocopies made on both sides of a sheet of paper?
Yes, photocopies are made on both sides of a sheet of paper but rarely.
      Do you use recycled paper?
We don't use rough paper, but some teachers recycle paper as rough paper.
Are people wasting paper in the toilets, in the canteen or in the cafeteria? Can some of those products be replaced by reusable objects?
Yes, people are wasting paper because they use more than they need.
Can you exchange information and documents through the Internet (mail, Moodle, wiki) and this way reduce the amount of paper you are using? Do you usually use it this way?

Yes,we exchange information and documents through the Internet, but we use it rarely.

      Summary :
In our school of Terre Sainte in Réunion Island, we use 900 reams of paper for the photocopier per year. We don't have specific places where we can separate the paper except the bin in the teachers room. And we don't use recycled paper. The problem in our school is that we don't recycle and waste the energy. In our opinion the solution is to have more recycling bin, waste less energy, do the good choice for less waste, use more the paper on both sides instead of on one side, use more paper recycling.

    2. Paper (The Basque Country's team)
      Information from the manager

During the last four months the school bought 80 boxes of folios, each box having 5 packets. As each packet has got 500 folios, we spent 200,000 folios in those months.

      Information from the bins

We have investigated how much paper we use at school. We have looked in twelve classes bins. And now we say the results more or less:

In our classes the bins are half filled, we use the paper on one side only, most of it is wasted, we never reuse and we don't use paper on both sides.

      Information from our teachers

Our task was to ask teachers how many photocopies they do a week, if they use it on both sides, if they recycle paper and if they use digital boards instead of paper.

      · Most of teachers say that they use recycled paper.
      · They do about around 42 photocopies a week.

      · They do photocopies on both sides.

      · Some teachers use digital boards instead of paper, but not all of them.

      Information from the caretaker

The caretaker is the person in charge of the photocopiers. In our school they are made between 200 and 1000 photocopies per day. Sometimes they are used on one side and others on both sides. The caretaker told us they use recycled paper. He also told us that the folios which are wasted are taken by an enterprise to be recycled.

  2. ELECTRICITY (Basque Country's team)
Working around our "Energy Blog" we have learnt how much electricity we consume in our school. We have learnt that when we use electricity, sometimes we make a good use of it, and sometimes we waste it.
We use electricity in our daily life for almost everything. As soon as we get up we start using energy and consequently, we also start polluting our environment: We turn the lights on, use the microwave oven to heat our breakfast,...
Now, let's see how the situation is like in our school:

Our school is placed in the centre of the town, half of the building faces to the South (that means that the classes in this part of the building have a good natural light), and the other half faces to the North. In this part the classes are darker.
But, nevertheless where the classes are, we have noticed that the lights, in all the classrooms, are always ON, even during sunny days.
During the break time, for example, or when we go to the Lab, sometimes we forget to turn the lights OFF, and in these cases we are also wasting ENERGY.
Another problem we have found is that some people, (students and also teachers) think that for short periods of time, it is better not to switch the lights off (Most of our lights at school are fluorescent bulbs, low-consume ones) and some of us have heard that they consume more when you turn them ON frequently than if you leave them ON all the time. (Have a look to this document we have found in Internet)

*.- The corridors at our school are very dark, they haven't got a good natural light, so the lights are ON during the whole day.
*.- Toilets: The lights in the toilets are always ON. We can't turn them ON or OFF because there are no switches; They are central controlled, the same as the lights in the corridors.
*.- In our opinion, it would be a good idea to install any kind of automatic lighting system in the toilets and corridors. If so, we would only use energy whenever a person enter those places.

In our school there are many electrical appliances such as computers, interactive boards, TV sets, and so on,... most of them are completely switch off when they are not in use, but we have also learnt that there is a problem concerning the use of the computers and the teachers.
Teachers don't usually turn the computers off. Sometimes, even at the weekends, the computers are ON. The teachers leave them ON in the teachers' room and also in some of the different departments.

    1. ABOUT ELECTRICITY BY ANIKÓ JAKAB, KRISZTINA RAUSCH AND LUCA PÁPAY (HUNGARY)

In our school the avarage level of electricity consumption is 27320 kW a month.
Our school has a really good natural lighting system. When the weather is sunny, we usually don't have to use artifical illumination. However, in our school some of the classrooms are in the basement, which is the darkest part of the building. We often need to turn the lights on there. When we don't need the lights anymore, most of the students turn them off.
The light bulbs and most of the household gadgets in our school are energy efficient. We also have some old type of gadgets, which are not energy efficient. It would be very good if we could replace them with some more modern ones.
Unfortunately, we don't have an automatic lighting system in our school. At some parts of the school, we don't really need them, though, because we wouldn't turn on the lights anyways.
We have a lot of electrical devices in Fazekas. We always turn off the computers in the I.T. classrooms when we don't use them, but the situation is different in the teacher's room. The computers are always turned on there until 6 p.m., then they turn off automatically. The same happens to the interactive boards in the classrooms. The TV-s in the school are usually turned off, we only use them during some lessons when we watch films inconnection with the subject.

    2. About electricity Brandon Angama,Samuel Quetin (LA Réunion)

How long are they bulbs on during the day, do you have an idea?
In the computer room lights are on at least 6 hours per day

ABOUT ELECTRICITY ALEXIS ANDREAZZA, EVA RANGAYEN, NOELLIA BEGUE, ELISABETH DIJOUX
First of all,in our school, the levels of electricity consumption per year are 148,090 kwh.
The devices in the day are used round-the-clock , some are off, but we don't use green lights. We should use them.
In our school , we have 163 computers but only 15 are efficient and there is an automatic system that turns on and off when people are present or not. It's the same for the lights :there are automatic systems that turn on and off when people are here or not like for the light.
In order to save energy at school we must:
-Turn off the lights and use natural light.
-turn off the ventilation and open windows.
-turn off the computers after each use.
-use the video-projector only in case of necessity.
-sensibilized the people in school and staff of school.

No, all food waste must be thrown .
Is most food natural or industrial food? Is there any type of concern related to food choices at your school? It's industrial food. There is no concern about food choices.
Do people at your school try to choose environmentally friendly packages?

We don't know because the food arrives in containers .Except rice which come in plastic bags and it's not environmentally packages.

Do you recycle those packages? No, we don't recycle .
Are the products you eat mostly from local places and markets or do they come from distant places that require some kind of long transportation ?

    1. FOOD (THE BASQUE COUNTRY'S TEAM)

In our school food has to do with lunch and break time

      Break time

We’ve searched information about what students bring to eat in the break time. We asked about the age, if they buy it or it’s homemade and if they recycle the packages or not.

In our school, if we’re older than 14, we can go out in the break time. So we’ve asked to the people who go out and the people who stay in the playground.

First, the students that stay in the playground. Most of them carry snacks from home, like apples, biscuits, sandwiches… and they throw the packages into the bin, because there are a lot of bins in the playground, and if the teachers see us throwing them to the floor, they punish us. Most of the packages are aluminium paper.

Finally, the students who go out. Most of them buy snacks in a shop near the school, like sandwiches, buns, “txoripan”, a typical sandwich made of sausage… and most of them throw the packages to the floor, because there are less bins near the school. Most of the packages are plastic bundles, tins of juice and chewing gums wrappings

      Lunch time

The food comes from Maggui (an enterprise in Vitoria, a city next to our town).
They only have to heat it. There is a school menu for everybody. We throw away a lot of food (more than 50%) every day, mainly vegetables and salad
Teachers have the option of eating the remaining food by paying 1 euro
There are 6 people working at the school canteen. The school menu for people who don’t live in Laudio, our town, is 2,80 Euros, but for people who live in Laudio the menu is 4 Euros. The menu for special days is 4,60
      Menu:
We looked at the menu of the canteen for this term and found this
      First plate:
      Second plate:
      Third plate:
      Pasta 7 days
      Rice 2 days
      Vegetables 25 days
      Meat 15 days

      Fish 11 days

      Omelete 3 days
      Fruit 21 days

      Yogurt 17 days

This is the menu for this week (We can have lunch at the canteen only three days a week).

Monday: Rice, fish with salad and fruit

Tuesday: Vegetables (Chickpeas), pork with peppers and yogurt

Wednesday: Vegetables(pure), fish with salad and fruit
